I ALWAYS crowded plants and, like you, cannot bear to pull up a living plant. Once established, my garden tended to crowd out weeds too! I used to tell my plants " you ave six weeks of TLC and then tou are on your own." It ALWAYS worked in CA and NEVER worked in OH! LOL

I've never thinned, but am thinking about doing it with onions this year, especially since they're supposed to keep the deer away. The book I was just reading suggested planing them close together, then harvesting every other one early as a green onion. Can't hurt to try I guess!
