Autumn Vegetable Gardens?

Do you plant fall veggies? If so, when do you plant? What do you plant? Do you buy starts at the nursery or grow from seed (or a little of both)?

When do you get the first frost in your area?

Even though summer is in full swing here, I'm thinking that its time to start planning the cool weather garden. A gardener's work is never done!

I had the best of intentions of starting a garden this summer and never did, I have the seeds, the soil, everything and it just never happened. I was thinking the other day that maybe it might be a good idea to start one now. I'm in Texas, so we have a long time to go still and I had started a small garden 2 years ago in early September that did well. I'm more afraid it'll be one more thing on my "to do list" and end up getting neglected, or I'll go away for a week in September to take the college kid back to school and DH won't touch it and everything will die.

Arryl, I hear you on the part about going away and what happens to the garden. Dh was talking about me joining him on a business trip in late summer and I told him no way, I've worked too hard all summer long to walk away at that point! After the bulk of it is harvested I'll go somewhere LOL.

Are your younger dd's old enough to take over watering for a week? Maybe they would enjoy a little garden as a mother-daughter project.

No veggies, but I was just looking at my front flower beds and they are deeeeaaaaad and so colorless where they are alive that I was thinking I need to start planning my fall flowers. I do want to try a small pot of carrots and possibly some broccoli. I do plant cabbage, but it's ornamental. :)
