Doing some Spring Break gardening!

DH and the kids are home this week, all on Spring Break, so he's been doing some work in the garden. He's gotten the raised beds tilled, carrot seeds planted outside, and lots more seeds started inside. He's also identified a few new spots for extending the garden this year and plans to till them today.

Since our compost heap has been frozen for months there are still some solids in it, so we have a black tarp over it to help speed the process over the next few weeks. Hopefully it will be ready to spread by then.

My DH has also been busy but it's too soon to plant veg here.

He's been clearing last year's leaves (he leaves them in beds as a supplement to the mulch he added) and dead vegetation (like all the ornamental grasses he needs to trim back). He's also been planting bulbs and evergreens at the garden park... We have a blue spruce that we bought last year for Christmas and it needs to be plated but he can't find a place acceptable to both neighbors. And there is this horribly torn-up area where the little tractor went, over and over, when our retaining wall was built. We are trying to get the contractor to return our calls since his contract called for restoration and right now it's erosion instead! If push comes to shove, that little blue spruce might end up right in the middle of that damaged spot to prevent further erosion.

Clean-up was all we were really planning to do - plus starting some seeds inside - but DH got a little overzealous and planted 5 strawberry plants. (50% off at Home Depot!) I told him that it was supposed to snow today, and it is right now, which meant that I was outside covering them with milk jugs this morning. And to think it was over 70 degrees yesterday!!!

Update on the erosion issue... the guy was here this morning, tossing seed and straw on the site during a thunderstorm! Wonder how effective THAT will be!

And yes, the little blue spriuce (eventually to be a BIG blue spruce) will go right there, on the border of our lot with out neighbor, where this erosion is happening. When? Who knows! LOL

Oh dear! Well let's hope it didn't all wash away. Doesn't seem like the smartest time to do something like that.
