ok..end of the season here...in New York..and as we head into winter, I was wondering what you all do to put your garden to "bed "...and BIG tips and tricks of the trade?  I usually clean all the dead plants out....weeds...and such.  I till in leaves and grass clippings...and straighten out my fixed poles and attached wire.  do you spray anything on the ground to help with bugs..natural or otherwise.? share your routine with me

Fall showed up here in the Mid-South at midnight last night, a 30 degree plunge in temp (down to 50) and that makes it the end for me!  I'll pull up the spent stuff this weekend and dig up whatever herbs I want to over-winter.

Last year I put down weed block fabric over my beds.  It did not work.  It was more like weed STARTER fabric.  I don't spray but I really should put down a fall season fertilizer this year.  I have perhaps one more mowing in my future for this year.

Same here, in NW Ohio. WE had "indian SUmmer" the beginning of the week but it's cold again now.

DH cuts back his perennials and mulches (we get truckloads of bark mulch evey week until he's finished) to a thickness to protect the plants during a hard freeze. He's also doing the last of his transplanting and bulb planting and he created bark-covered paths in three of the larger daylily beds in teh front garden.  Otherwise... I clean out my pots which had my veggies (I picked the last of the semi-ripe tomatoes yesterday. There are still a lot of green ones but I'm not likely to do fried green tomatoes or chutneys so those plant siwll likely be trashed soon.

So the weeds grew under the fabric?
