New Homeowner, With Issues....

My name is Andrea. This is my first time at iVillage, but I was desperate to find a forum of like-minded individuals.

We moved into our first home late last year, when the snow was on the ground. We had extensive renovations done throughout the inside, but now that we're out of money ;o) and summer is springing up, we've realized we have quite a yard to contend with! We have a corner lot (not an acre or anything) and it's pretty large for a subdivision...with no fence to speak of, but the strangest privacy line of evergreens - many of which are missing, leaving gaps in the privacy part.

I am looking for somewhere where I can discuss and learn about pruning trees, bushes, fencing, vegetable gardening, and some flower gardening. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada and I have always had veg gardens before with very little trouble. Flowers will be a new horizon for me, and I will likely start with planters.

I am heading outside now to take some photos, and I will add them here once I confirm I am at the right place. There is so much to do that we almost don't know where to start.

OK, it's that time of year so keep an eye out in the paper, on bulletin boards, etc. for notices of plant sales and swaps! For example, around here (NW Ohio --- not really that far from you, actually), the Black Swamp Hosta and Daylily Society has an annual plant sale, as does Toledo Botanical Garden (one in spring, one in fall, in fact). I think that I heard that the Zoo had a plant sale as well. And Master Gardeners are actually doing a plant swap this weekend at our county fairgrounds (bring one plant, take home two! Not a bad deal! --- they are getting the plants from thinning their own gardens and the city's garden park plantings as well!).

All of that sounds great actually. Thanks. I visited a couple of plant sales on Earth day, but as I don't know much about anything other than veg, I left empty-handed. I have the pics and am going to start a new thread, most specifically about my treeline (to start with).
I do surf Kijiji often, and have noticed many people trading plants and offering cuttings. I am here to learn what I am looking for so I know what to get when I go out.
Thanks so much!

Thank you for the welcome. I have been to our Botanical gardens in Niagara, but only to the "green" house in the Hammer ;o)
I am about to start a new thread with some pics, and the buying local is some great advice, thanks.
So glad to have found the right place!
