New USDA map may mean earlier planting!

A new map from the USDA has some northern gardeners hoping to grow plants that used to be considered too fragile for cold weather zones. The hardiness zone chart is about a half zone warmer than the last one issued in 1990. The USDA says the changes are not due to global warming, but to more sophisticated mapping methods. Seed sellers and buyers say that, whatever the reason, the warmer temperatures expand possibilities for planting this spring.

Do you plant according to the map, or more from experience?

Based on experience around here, I'm a "wait and see what the weather actaully does" kind of planter! 'Cause lately, we've been having some strange roller-coaster kinds of weather! We have a great source in advice, too, since our local garden center owner is a native son and knows just when to plant what! He advised me to wait two weeks past the reo=commended planting time last year adn he was so right on...

That's a good person to know Carol!

I just read Zen and the Art of Gardening in the High and Arid West by David Wann (author of Affluenza) that is specific to our area. He lives about 20 minutes from me, so it was a great resource. He had bits of advice like "when the cottonwood buds, plant the spuds" that I found funny and helpful.

I liked how they specifically said in the article "this isn't because of global warming" like they didn't want to start a big uproar. It was the first thing I thought of though!

Me too, but DH says it's because of better data collection and computer models!
