Have you ever worked with non-yarn materials?

I found a pretty cool knitting project that uses tulle instead of yarn.  I've never knit with tulle before.  I have knit with cord and embroidery thread, though.  I've seen some nice photos of crochet projects that used plastic shopping bags.

Have you ever knit/crocheted with something other than yarn?  How did it turn out?

I did, but I never finished the project. Nylon cord, it was supposed to be a sweater in reverse stockinette stitch. Supposedly, if you then painted it right, it would look a lot like chain mail for a costume. The first row was miserable because the cord wouldn't stretch at all. After that it was ok, but not that fun, and the last time I finished a sweater I didn't knit again for 10 years.

When I knit with cord, it was just to make a bracelet (i-cord).  How far did you get into the sweater before you gave up? 

If I can find tulle on clearance, I'm going to give it a try.  The pattern is for kitchen scrubbies, and tulle is supposed to work really well for that.

I haven't yet, but have wanted to try a few projects with strips of T-shirt material. Maybe a rug or something! I would be interested to know what you think of knitting with tulle.

It was a couple decades ago. I think I did one big piece. Hadn't gotten as far as sewing anything together, which might have been a problem.
