When you stitch, do you like to figure things out for yourself, or do you like to be told what stitches and threads to use and where to put them? Break out of that panic box and experiment: http://www.nuts-about-needlepoint.com/take-a-step-into-the-unknown-stitch-something/

Definitely I am a scaredy cat when it comes to changing colors or stitches. I HAVE done, usually becasue I'm out of the specified color in my stash and am too lazy to go to Hobby Lobby and buy new floss (althought eh last time I went to buy new floss, they didn't have the colors I wanted!)

I have to admit I'm not good at choosing colors. In fact, when asked to improvise, I tend to stick with a colorway that worked elsewhere and I have the floss colors already together for that other project (probably why I stitched so many blue/green/purple pieces last year: Kimono, Birds of a Feather, Sumptuous Embroidery in Blue, etc...)

But mainly my fear is $$$ based. Given the cost of floss (or other threads), fabric (have you priced an overdyed piece of linen lately?), canvas and beads... I don't want to take a chance on trying something, having it suck, and ending up throwing all those $$$ away! True, to some extent you can rip out mistakes, but floss doesn't survive that and to some extent, fabrics don't either, so multiple redos aren't really an option.
