Ever buy thread on sale?
Mon, 01-28-2013 - 6:38pm

Over the years many of the thread companies that I like have gone out of business and some needlepoint store will have a sale of their threads. So I go and get a bunch of thread--usually one skein in each color. It has finally come to my attention that this is a really dumb idea! What can you do with 1 skien of a discontinued thread!! So this is another thing that I am trying to break myself of doing!

First of all, welcome to Stitcher's Niche. Happy to have you visit us adn hope you will tell us more abut yourself in future.

You are right --- one needs to be cautious about the brands one buys --- for quality purposes more than anything. There are a number of "substandard" threads - and fabrics, for that matter - on the market which have as their sole selling point "cheapness". But cheapnes is as cheapness does and you can have real issues with those brands.

Have you managed to find a supplier of your crafting supplies that you trust as quality goods and that will also be in business long enough for you to build a decent stash? I have found several of the former (quality), but sadly, many don't stay in business long (needlework sales and design is not a very thriving business right now, I fear, and one has to depend on the large companies that claim to be all things to all stitchers) and I ended up with small selections (one skein each of a few colors or one or two pre-cut pieces of a beautifully dyed fabric) only to have those places go out of business. This forces me to use those single skeins and precuts in small stash-busting projects instead of the larger pieces I had hoped to do...

I too realized this problem several months ago, I do not like the method a thread company starts to take neelepoint as one of their main business, and do not like the affiliated sale as well, thus I just buy things from those companies who specialize masterly in not that many businesses at the same time. :) It is great to realize the point in fact, thus avoiding to buy unnecessary and low-qualified things. :)

Ooh, don't say that!  I was just at Come to the Point in San Rafael a few weeks ago & she had her Caron Watercolours (that's the thick one right?) buy 1,get 1 free & I bought several colors.  Still, I'm sure I'll use them, right?

There was a time I was obsessed with having a complete collection of one threads and so I also bought one skein per color. Yeppers, not much use! Which is why I finally resorted to using them in things like "Stash Busters" and crazy quilt blocks!
