The woman who repaired my embroider machine said the problem was thread fuzz balled up in tension disks, and that thread should always be pulled downward when removing.

I have never heard that, either. I wonder if it is mostly true only for the newer machines. Anyway, thanks for the info, Jacquie, and I am glad to hear your machine is like new.
Fascinating! I've been doing it wrong too, although I don't think I pull as violently as she did! Time to apologize to my machines, I guess!
