Is that step necessary?

One of the most amusing parts of one of my "guilty secret" television programs (Cooks Kitchen, very late at night, on public television) is that the host is always questioning "is that step necessary?". Of course, it always is IF you want the recipe to turn out properly.

Similarly, there are steps in sewing (or quilting or embroidery or...) that one might ask the same question about...

I found this interesting dsicussion about one such step in garment sewing...

Staystitching (from SewDaily, May 8, 2013): "In addition to keeping the fabric from stretching during construction, it also acts as a reinforcement stitch line if you need to clip any curved seams. If you are working with a more loosely woven fabric, it will help keep the fabric edges from pulling out of shape."

I realized how long it had been since I'd done any serious stitching when I had to check out the article to remind myself what "stay stitching" meant.  I believe that back when I used to do lots of sewing for my mom, sister & I that I always did this.  This was a good reminder.
