I was always told to make a swatch and see how I did in making the goals set out in the pattern. The person who posted the comment is right on and correct.

I get frustrated with needlework threads when they don't tell how many threads to use for certain sizes of canvas and they don't tell you how many ply it is. One of the other things which bothers me is the smell that hand dyed thread lets off when you are using it. The one that I am using now has a most unpleasant smell.

I don't remember where I saw this but one designer wrote that, while measuring out lengths of one brand of over dyed, she found that while the label said x number or yards, in actual fact, all the skeins she was measuring came at at least a half yard short! So she recommends getting extra of all over dyed beyond the number os skeins a chart might recommend.
