Where are some of your favorite summer vacation destinations?  Do you stay close to home or travel far?

For as long as I can remember, we have never taken a "traditional" summer vacation. Many reaasons --- university (we worked in sumer, and took classes so we could minimize time and money spent --- besides, what graad student has $$$ for vacation?), job constraints (espeically when we lived overseas adn DH was the boss and so he let his employees take the first pick on home leave and R&R, which meant we didn't get summer and we didn't get the major holidays like Thanksgiving adn Christmas --- someone had to manage the business, KWIM?), money (we used to own a vaction home but summer was the best rental time so we tended to avoid the season in favor of income), and, more recently, DH's dedication to his gardening pursuits. So when we do "vacation", it's usually in October when a) weather is iffy at best and b) many places have already closed down for the "season" BUT the garden has been put to bed for teh winter and it's cheaper then too!

Last year's vacation was a roof --- we cancelled the Baltic cruise we had hoped to take to pay for that roof.  And while DH is getting antsy again (he sent me an email about a cruise only yesterday), he's not ready to take off again. Personally, neither am I, especially given the issues cruise ships have had of late...

Anyway, after all that blethering, I have to say we don't have a favorite place or vacation style or whatever...

J and I took an extended weekend trip last summer in between my travel for work in Texas. It was great because my best friend from high school and her family traveled to the same state that J and I were visiting, and we also had time to see J's sister, her family, J's mom, and J's stepsister. We ate a lot of good barbeque, too!

This summer we don't have any travel plans, but we decided we're having a stay-cation this weekend. We did go to our favorite church bazaar tonight, which is always fun.

Later this week, I'll be in California, where one of my friends relocated at the end of last year; so, I'm looking forward to seeing her. That just worked out at the end of my work trip, too.

Travel safely!

you are really lucky to get a chance to see old family members and friends while traveling and working. i know that you job lets you do alot of fun things and you have the chance to catch up with people that you love and enjoy. i would to have a job where i can travel and meet new people. i guess if it is for me then i am willing to do whatever it takes to keep things in the right realm for me.
