Back in 1997, I picked up a stray cat (Twinkie) and brought her to my home with my other one year old cat. They got along great from the very beginning. Then about 4 years later my cat became very nasty and aggressive. I knew something was wrong and took her to the vet. She had stones and had surgery to get them removed. Later when she returned home she would have episodes of hissing, growling, screaming and stalking both myself and my other cat. The vet decided to place her on Amitryptaline, this was also about the time that I first became pregnant. It worked like a charm and she was back to herself in no time. She stayed on this medicine since then. Move ahead two years and my other cat dies suddenly of kidney failure. She seemed fine and things went on as normal. I finally decided (after 1 1/2 years) since my other cat was gone to take her off the Amitriptalyne. I did this at least 6 months ago. Only a month ago, my son and I were in my bedroom and out of nowhere she jumped and bit my leg. She was the worst I have ever seen her. She stalked me, crouched, hissed, lost her bowels, had a fluffy tail. I finally took her to the vet so that they could work with her, as I was afraid for my 3 year old sons safety at this point. They placed her back on the Amitriptalyne and in a week she came back home. She was once again back to normal. However, in one weeks time she started to come back at my leg again wanting to bite me along with the other problems (hissing, stalking, etc). I tried placing her in my basement and bringing her back up with me once my son was in bed for the evening. She seemed to be fine and then she gradually got worse so I've had her back in the basement for two days again. I've called my vet a few times and the first time they told me to be patient that the medication would take 1-2 months to get in her system. Just today, they told me that I should buy Feliaway and gradually take her off the amitryptaline. That the Feliaway should be enough. I went to buy Feliaway this evening and the pet store told me that it really was for cats with spaying problems and not the type of problems my cat has. So I returned back home more confused than ever with nothing accomplished. At this point I'm really concerned that my vet doesn't know what they are doing and that I really don't have any other options. I'm scared for my son's safety and that maybe something is more serious with my cat since she is not getting better on the Amitryptaline. I would love any feedback possible.
Thanks for your time!

Hello,
Hmm. Let me start by saying I am sorry for the loss of your cat due to kidney failure. We also lost one to that in May so I know how hard it can be.

*WELCOME* to Cats Twinkiesmom2004!
Hi Twinkiesmom2004.
Also, thanks for the kind thoughts about my other kitty who passed. She fought hard to stay here. We even drove far away for a kidney transplant but after her dialysis she gave up the fight and her heart stopped. It was a very sad time, especially because she was only 7 years old.
That's so sad about your other kitty.
