Another kitten rescue....

Most of you may recall that we found a litter of kittens at my work about 3 months ago. Bailey below is of course one of those kittens.

Well, as expected, Mama has been at it again. Yesterday, we found another litter. Again, they appear to be about 5-6 weeks old. The funny thing is, they are almost an exact duplicate of the last litter - 2 are white and gray, and one is gray with white feet (like my Bailey)! I've attached a pic below. They are in a box, again, next to my desk.

I know I mentioned last time that I would see about getting mama trapped, spayed and released, and I'd even looked up a local group that would do it, but I'm the world's biggest procrastinator and one thing took over another and I never actually contacted them (I know, I'm terrible). I sent them an email yesterday, and they emailed me back saying that they could lend me a trap, and that they could even take the kittens if no homes were found. They want me to call them tonight (which I will). Two of the kittens are so far spoken for, but one is still homeless. I already have two at home, so I can't take any more.

I'll keep everyone updated!

From experience I can tell you that trapping mama and having her spayed will be the most rewarding thing you can do.

All three kittens now have homes. Phew!

I am going to check with one of my co-workers to see whether she would be willing to continue dealing with the TNR for mama kitty or not, in case we aren't lucky enough to actually catch her this week. I'm going on holidays next week! If not, then I'll have to ask the group to wait until the following week. :(

Awww, they are just so adorable. You're getting good at finding homes for the little ones.

Where's the emoticon for half happy, half unhappy? I have good news and bad news....

Bad news first - two people who said they would take a kitten have changed their minds. The silver lining, of course, is that at least they decided now rather than a week from now when they would end up dumping them at a shelter (or worse). But now 2 of the 3 kitties are homeless again. *sigh* However, we MAY have other potential adopters in the works.... MAYBE.

Now the good news - I spoke to a lady from the rescue group last night that does Trap and Release. She was really nice, and has agreed to help us out. She said that because this is a commercial property, and also because they are so busy with other areas, that she could lend us a trap (or two) and simply show us how to set them up. Then we monitor them, and when we catch a cat, we can either drive it to their vet ourselves (if we're comfortable with that), or we can call her and she will come and pick them up. We are going to start on September 6th because, first of all, she said females who have just had a litter of kittens shouldn't be spayed until their milk dries up (takes about a week), and also because I am away on holidays next week. We'll start fresh after the Labour Day long weekend.

I'm excited about this! I feel good that I am doing something to solve the problem, other than of course having the cats euthanized (I shudder at the thought!). I'm happy also that one of the owners of my company said it was a good idea. I complain all the time that my bosses are cheap SOBs who can't manage a hole in the ground, but they do care about animals! LOL.

I have a trap, its very easy to use. I'd probally take the kitty to the vest asap after she is trapped. Maybe cover part of the trap with a towel or sheet so the kitty won't be so scared during the ride. If you need help let the rescue group know, hopefully someone will step up and help you. Put something good to eat in the trap such as tuna or fried chicken. You can do this. You will feel so relieved to have the kitty(s) spayed. If you can take pics of the kittens to post on petfinder.org and at local vet clinics that also helps get them a home. Pictures really help. Good luck. Donna
