Are all torties tempermental?

I've read other posts that mention off-hand that torties are tempermental. So I thought I'd ask, is this really true? I've never heard that before. My Chalimar is the first tortie I've ever owned. I always complain about Bad Annie, because she is on a crusade to destroy everything I own. But Chalimar, she's different. She has to be in whatever room I'm in. She doesn't want to be picked up, but likes to be petted on her own terms. She holds "conversations" with me all the time. In general, she's a very companionable cat.

But Chalimar has a dark side. She could be laying in the middle of the floor, all calm and peaceful. I'll walk past, and she'll jump up and start smacking the heck out of my ankles! My reaction is usually to stop, stare her down, and inform her that I'm the boss, I'm bigger than she is, and she should cut it out. I've had her back my sister out of a room before, with hissing and charging. She's a big cat...not fat, but tall and lanky. So if you don't know what she's up to, she can be scary. (I say this now, as she's rubbing on my ankles all cuddly.) When I have guests, I inform them that IF Chali decides to come out (she usually hides when visitors are here), they are not to touch her, unless I tell them they can.

So then, is this a normal thing for torties? She's not the dominant cat, Bad Annie is. She's not a young cat, she's 7. I just figured she was cranky.

The majority of torties and calicos that I have encountered have that sort of sassy temperment - there are a scant few that are actually *nice* all the time.

My Tasha has a bit of a "catitude", as my BF puts it. LOL. She is very friendly with people though, and doesn't shy away from strangers at all. She is not overly playful, but she does get into her "psycho" moods once in a while. She is very chatty -- we have entire conversations with each other - LOL! Torties are known to be quite the chirpers.

I could never have asked for a better kitty. :)
