Bad Annie strikes again!

Over the weekend, my new sofa was delivered. This is the sofa that I bought to fit specifically in one place in my family room. Right under the pass-through to the kitchen. I come home from work, and glasses and bottles are knocked off my kitchen counter. This is Bad Annie's MO....knock everything off a surface that she possibly can. We've been in the new condo 6 months, and she's never been on the kitchen counter, because she was scared to make the jump. The new sofa provides the perfect step-ladder.
So, any suggestions for detering her from jumping on the counter? She's almost 9, and I still haven't broken her from jumping on the table while I'm eating. She doesn't take no for an answer (which, for a deaf cat, is physical removal).
Just to rub it in...she spent most of this evening in the upstairs bathroom, yowelling and knocking things off the counter there. I ignored her. She WANTS me to come upstairs, so she gets attention. People wonder why I have 4 hairbrushes on my bathroom counter. It's because they don't break when they hit the floor!

Oh dear... I don't know if anything will help - if anything, you can try a scat mat (I'm considering getting one for my desk - Timmy seems to have a thing about getting up as high as he can and my desk is perfect for that - he can get really high up onto an entertainment unit I have - last time I let him up there he wound up knocking a bunch of stuff down on his way down and then he managed to unplug a few things behind my computer!

I've had a squirt bottle on hand since shortly after I got Annie. The darn thing likes water! I squirt her, and she lays down. It's like she's saying "ahhh....that feels nice. Wait, you missed a spot." The only way the squirt bottle works to stop her, is to get her in the face. (I don't use a heavy stream) Then she runs off. But in true Bad Annie fashion, she comes back a short time later.
My mom suggested putting newspaper on the counter. I'm pretty sure Annie won't want to jump on the newspaper. But I don't want it there for the rest of her life. Knowing Annie, once the paper is gone, she'll try it again.
My one-cat demolition squad. You know that because she's like this, she'll live to be 30. You also know that the minute she's gone...I will bawl my eyes out the first time I can set a picture frame on an end-table, and not worry about it biting the dust.

One of my cuties (who shall be nameless) loves to knock things off surfaces. I decided I really didn't need clutter and have cut down on the things I put on surfaces. Hairbrushes go in drawers, etc. If a pencil gets knocked off a desk, I don't get excited. My cats are so cute, I can't get mad at them. They're just having fun. You just have to cat proof your house and put away what you don't want knocked around. And just enjoy their cute exhuberance; it is nice your cat is so healthy and playful. They're really just like little kids: they want to play and get attention from their parents.

Oh, I don't have things laying around. I don't even own end tables of coffee tables. I bought a huge entertainment center that has high shelves, just so I could display pictures. Annie is almost 9, and she has been this way since day one. I've left the hairbrushes on the bathroom counter, because if she doesn't have something like that to knock down, she will turn her attention to pulling books out of the bookcase or dvd's out of the dvd rack. The kitchen counter has always been safe, though. This one is new.

Here's what you can do:
Go out to Walmart or any hardware store and pick up some two-sided tape (aslo known as carpet tape). Stick it all over your counter top, and on any other hard surfaces she likes to jump. You could even stick it on newspaper first, if you don't want to put the tape directly on a surface, and tape down the corners so it doesn't slide when she jumps up. Soon, she will learn that this "sticky" surface isin't a pleasant place to stand. After a week or two of this, you should be able to take the stuff off, because she will have learned. Take it off once it's been a while since she jumped up.
As for others with kitties who like to knock things over, a friend of mine bought some museum putty specifically for this purpose. You use it to "stick" things to a surface, like framed photos, vases, or other knick knacks. Obviously it won't be practical for dishes or personal items, but at least it may save some sentimental items around your house!
