My daughter has been having trouble with the school social worker being too, what's a good word? Um nosey I guess... Well, they say she came to school smelling funny a few times and instead of calling me and asking me to come in and talk about it, they called Child Protective Services to come investgate me. The Child Protective worker, found no problem with me, my house or anything else. Long story short, the school wasn't satisfied, so they decided to call animal control and tell them we had 15 to 20 cats in our house!!!! What nerve!!! Obviously we don't have that many cats. We do have a number of cats, yes. But no where near that many, come on now. The principal admited to me that she herself had made the call. How dare she. Who does she think she is?? How would she feel if I did that to her? The animal control officer, after seeing that, no we did not have that many cats, only asked if their shots were up to date.

That upset me as much, if not more than her calling Child Services. I mean what does my child's school have to do with my cats? Can anyone here tell me who has the right to tell me how many cats are "too many cats"? The principal told me I had "too many cats". I guess she thought it was her job to help me with that "problem"? Some people have no respect at all....

I hope so, I have considered trying to transfer my child to another school next year, but would that be letting her win? I don't know. I did report her actions to the school board and her supervisor is aware of her actions. I had two meetings with her supervisor about the problems. (the principal's supervisor) I told them I was afraid to send my child to school for fear of what they would do next. They had no right to tell me what to do with my animals. Her supervisor agreed with me on that. He said it was not their job to tell me what to with them, or how many I should have. I filed written grievance also. I don't care if she gets fired or not, I just want me and all other parents treated like we should be. She claimed to have dogs and cats, and I found out later that she used to have cats, but no longer, hmmmm.... Not much of a cat person if she gave up her cats... long story. Anyway, you'd have to meet this woman. All mouth, all show. Nothing to show for it. She even made the call "anonymously". Not even the guts to put her name on it, I knew at the time who did it, and she later admitted it, to me in person. I dispise people like that. She didn't mind making calls on me, so I made calls on her and reported her for her unprofessional behaviour. Fair's fair!!

If it were me, I'd be at the very least demanding a written appology from the principal and the school board, to be sent to all the agencies involved (Child protective services, animal control), a copy put in my child's school record, a copy put in the prinicpal's employment record, and I'd want the appology read out loud into the minutes of the next PUBLIC school board meeting...thereby making it a matter of public record. And if I didn't get that, I'd be threatening a law suit. I'd want all my bases covered. I mean, what happens if some misunderstanding happens in the future, and the authorities look into these records and see that child protective services was called on your family once? Who knows what sorts of problems that could bring. You need to protect your family and your pets.

I'm a supporter of public schools...have several family members who work for public schools. But I am NOT a supporter of public school employees on power trips. I'd do everything I could to make this particular principal think twice about making anonymous calls without proof.

They should have had a school nurse call you and discuss the problem. How does a child smell "funny"? I know they need to protect children but they went overboard. How many cats is too many? Every situation is different. I have 15+ rescued cats, utd on shots and all fixed if old enough. I have a home daycare of 18 yrs. I am just waiting for them to shut me down. My food man (state man who checks for cleanliness etc...and my dept. of human resource lady who checks and approves me for my yearly license are fine with me. I told one of them recently that if the state came in and said get rid of the pets or close down-I would close down that second and they could watch the kids! Donna

Just wanted to add, this can happen at a private school just as easily. I personally would have been extremely po'd but they do have to check out complaints. Donna
