Delurking here! I have a problem with my beloved kitty. I'm sure it isn't a problem that you haven't heard here a hundred times. My little cat, Maui, is about 3 years old. I got her as a 4 month old and she took to her new home easily. She shares her life with a 9 year old black lab and they adore each other. She has always been fine with using the litter box and never had accidents, until last spring. I had my kitchen remodeled and it kind of freaked her out. It took about 3 months before they had it all put back together for me and Maui really didn't do well with the change. She started urinating on the carpet along the wall in the diningroom. I had kept her litterbox behind the furniture in the livingroom. I decided that if she wanted to potty in the diningroom I'd put the litterbox in there. Well, she always poops in the litterbox, but only uses it to urinate part of the time. A couple of times she has got some urine in the heat register and you can imagine what happened when the heat turned on. It ends up smelling like cat pee all over the place. I am totally disgusted over this new behavior of hers. Right now I have plastic runner around the edges of the diningroom to keep it off the carpet, but it still drips off and soaks into the rug. Ugh!! I have not punished her for her boo-boos because I don't normally see her do it. If I did, I would get after her immediately, but it doesn't do any good to try to correct her for it after the fact. However, I simply can't live with cat pee on the rug and a house that stinks. Is this a hopeless situation? Am I going to have to get rid of her to get rid of the problem?

Thanks to both of you! I will have her urine checked. Shouldn't be a problem with her going on the plastic runner. I do know about feline urinary issues and will definitely have it checked. I hadn't thought that she was going more frequently, but is just avoiding the litterbox. I'm trying to keep it clean daily so that she doesn't have to go
