Cat had kittens for the first time now..

I have a few questions, is there anything I should be doing? She had them one week ago today, right now her and her 4 kittens are in the bathroom, I have a basket for mama and babies, they are in there because I have a 1 yr old & a 3 yr old and well..they dont understand they cant hold them. Which brings me to the next question...when can they be held? I am dying myself to hold one! LOL mama lets me in there with no problems, she let me move them to the basket but I wore gloves to be safe. I have touched them but not held them, I dont think she would mind but wanted to see if anyone knew for sure.

Hi Mom2scorpios and *WELCOME* to Cats! I think I would wait another week or so to handle them. Mom cats can be VERY protective of their young, even to people that they trust. I wouldn't allow your kids to handle them yet either - especially since most kittens are born with roundworms which they can catch...I would wait until they are wormed (which they can start around 3 weeks of age.)

Good luck with them!

Hi Jenee. *WELCOME* to Cats. I don't think it would hurt the kittens to hold them gently occasionally. I have a friend that breeds cats and she holds her kittens from the day they are born, or pretty close. She said it helps with their socializing with humans. I'd be careful with letting your children hold them and maybe limit them to just petting the kittens. Like Cl-Cat said just be careful of roundworms. Yuck!

Please check back with us and let us know how they are doing. Do you have any pictures of them yet?
