Chasing tails?

My cat Shadeau likes to chase her tail's shadow. In fact, she would rather chase shadows than play with a real toy. She spins around so fast and makes herself dizzy. She isn't harming herself by doing this, is she?
If I have a bright light on, she goes nuts by spinning around. Sometimes, she forgets what she's doing and bumps her head on things. I'm just worried that she's going to hit her head so hard and injure herself.
Other than keeping the lights off, is there anything I can do to calm her down with this activity?
Personally, I think she's a dog in a cat's body. She paws the back door to go out (I don't let her go out unsupervised) and she wags her tail like a dog, especially when she's stalking something. It's odd that her name turned out to suit her perfectly. She's black, but little did I know that it would end up describing her favorite pastime.
Any ideas you have are much appreciated!! Thanks :)
