Desperately need help....

My cat, Sherman, is one year old and I love him to death!!! I live alone with just him, but my boyfriend wants me to move in with him. Unfortunately my b-friend is severely allergic to cats - his throat closes up and cannot breathe.

Does anyone have any advice on what my options are for dealing with this? I love Sherman so much I don't really know if I can handle giving him up.

Another question, how well do cats adjust to a new home. This may sound stupid, but will he adapt OK? will he miss me? will he even know the difference?

I hate having to choose between my cat and my boyfriend. Any advice would help me SOOOO much!!

Just my 2 cents - my pets are part of me - they are either accepted in that manner or else. I'm not being harsh or rude, just telling you how I feel about this kind of thing. I cannot offer any suggestions or answers to your problem, but what I wrote above was my initial reaction.

You can buy special wipes and shampoos to reduce the amount of dander on your cat, but I'd definitely have your BF get shots. My son is mildly allergic to cats (and really allergic to a lot of other things) and his allergist told us that having pets actually helped many people outgrow their allergies/asthma later in life because it desensitized them.

As far as moving goes, it's the people that matter to a cat, not the place. To help on moving day, put Sherman in a small room, like a bathroom, by himself with a cat box, food and water, and let him stay in there while the movers are doing their stuff. Keep him there until all the moving and shuffling around is done. Then, when the movers (or your friends or whoever is helping you) are gone, let him out to explore the place while you sit quietly. Move his cat box to its permanent place, then put him in it to let him know where it will be, then show him where his food will be. Cats adjust really quickly.

You got a lot of good suggestions.

Can your bf not come to your house to visit at all because of your cat?

I notice that you say, "My bf wants me to move in w/him." Not "I want to move in w/my bf." That may be telling. Like somebody said, cats are forever. BFs may not be.

Good luck.
