Did I make the right choice?

Hello everyone,

We adopted a kitty today from the Humane Society. I really am happy with adopting Lilly but on the other hand in my heart I really wanted a kitten. The reason I decided to adopt Lilly was because she is so deserving of a loving forever home and because my fiance has been wanting a siamese for the longest time. I felt that because I love him so much I would sacrfice my own feelings. I am really torn between what I want and what he wants. Then there is the possibilty that she could have FeLV and I just don't know how I would deal with that. I love all cats but my true love is kittens becaus they are just so cute and I love to watch them grow up. I guess you could say I'm really confused right now and I don't know if I made the right choice for the both of us or just him? Please don't think I'm a bad person for being torn right now. I am trying to do what is right for the both of us so we both will be happy. Please offer any advice or comforting words.

Michelle, you made the right choice. Love is a many splendored thing, as someone once said. When you truly love someone, you make sacrifices for them. I have to admit that when my SO made sacrifices for me, I loved her all the more. My heart filled with inexpressable love and joy. Those sacrifices that one makes for the other is what love is about and are an expression of love.

Your choice is the right one because you have a adopted Lilly and in doing so provide her with a good and loving home. Not many folk want to adopt an older cat, consequently many are euthanized. So, not only have you given Lilly a good and loving home, where she will be well taken care of and loved, you may also have saved her life.

Please, don't second guess yourself and for sure, please don't think that you are a bad person. You have done a wonderful thing. It's normal to have doubts about the decisions one makes. When I first adopted Sammy and was confronted with vet bills, not to mention an un-affectionate cat, I doubted my decision. Little did I know that he loves affection in the early hours of the morning. Heck, when Misha, as cute and adorable as she, is clawing at an oil painting, I question why I adopted her. But they are merely thoughts that go through my head when I am annoyed at her and last momentarily. In the final analysis, I love both of them and wouldn't change them for the world. My decision to adopt them was the right decision.

Michelle, you have made the right decision inspite of your doubts.

I hope this helps, and all the best,

Patrick, (sammycat2002)

Hello Sammy,

Thank You so much for your comforting words. It has made me feel alot better. I know that I made the right choice just had little doubts. I'm so happy that Lilly will have a second chance at life and will feel what it means to be loved. I can't wait for her to come home. She will be in our bedroom for about the first week and then I will start to introduce her to the other cats slowly. I know it will work out because I have lots of love to give plus patience.

Take care,

Michelle

You definitely made the right choice. Not many people want an older cat - they often get overlooked and eventually put to sleep because they are not a cute kitten. It's people like you who are willing to give an older cat a chance at a happy life that really affect me...I must commend you on this. Please don't second guess this choice - I wish you all the luck in the world!

Hi Michelle.

I understand how you are feeling. It's hard to please everyone, including yourself at the same time. I personally think you made a great decision. This is my insight on the matter..OK, ready? By adopting an Lily, you made your fiance' happy (he got his siamese) AND, you are giving a forever home to a cat that may have been passed over in the future b/c of her age. I agree, kittens are adorable, and fun and I too love watching them grow up. But there is a wonderful side to an adult cat that is just happy to curl up on your lap and when you look into their eyes, you see so much more wisdom and depth.

I hope you take some comfort from any any of this..

Hugs,

Michelle, I believe you made the right choice. Lilly needed to have a loving home, and you were the right person to give it to her. I know she will be well loved. Please don't second guess yourself, Lilly really needs you.

Michelle,

I completely understand how you feel about wanting a kitten. I felt the same way about wanting to watch a kitten grow up. At the same time, I think you made the right decision. As soon as you get your new kitty home and she gets acclimated, I'm sure you will start to find her antics just as cute as a kitten. I'm sure she's a wonderful cat with a lot of love and joy to give you. And I think that as long as she's in your life you'll never forget that you did give her that second chance at life. With a happy cat and knowing that, I'm not sure there is anything better! Good Luck and I'm sure you'll fall in love with her!

Everyone loves kittens. But oh how fast they grow. My little shelter kitten is now 3 years old. I cant believe it. We plan to adopt another shelter kitten this summer. Too bad the shelter doesnt do testing BEFORE you adopt. That seems kinda mean to me. Our shelter tests pre-adoption so you dont get your hopes up to be let down.

Enjoy your adult cat we have adopted 3 over the last 15 years and it gave us such a good feeling to take an adult that many people will not consider. You are a hero and you can always get another kitten later !

Good Luck

Hello Tami!

You are very right about what you've posted to me. When I first saw her I çoulnd't imagine why she was there. She was listed as a stray. She is so beautiful and very sweet. How could someone have let her go? All of the cat there were very sweet and very vocal. It breaks my heart that I can't take them all in. I really wish I could. I have a idea for starting my own animal sanctuary and maybe that allow me to help more cats and kittens. I can't wait to bring Lilly home. I haven't been able to sleep because all I can think about is bringing her home where she will be so loved by us. Thanks You Laurie for your comforting words. :) Take care!
