dog fence for cats?

Hello everyone!
We have been keeping all 5 of our cats indoors since we lost one last year to a car and one of them, Tazzy, was outside for three years so he cries a lot and sprays everywhere now that he is indoors. My hubby bought an electronic dog fence and put it around our backyard area and the collar gives off a little shock when the animal gets too close to the wires but I am afraid that it is too big for my cat. The two prongs which are aimed at his neck are thick and the hardware on it is about three inches long and a little heavy. The makers of the fence say it is okay for cats to wear but I am still concerned. Any advise would be very helpful!
Thanks from Raegan and Furkids!

I DO NOT THINK THAT IS A GOOD IDEA. IF YOUR CAT RUNS THREW THE ELECTRIC FENCE THEY WELL NOT COME BACK. I DO NOT BELIVE THEY ARE MADE FOR CATS.

LOVE IS SHOWN BY DEEDS, NOT WORDS.

Hi and thanks for all the help! He has been neutured since he was a kitten and I have tried feliway but it hasn't worked. I'll try the others you mentioned. I also looked at all the web sites you mentioned and they are all "closed" in fencing which are aestetically unpleasing to the eye so my hubby would most definetley not want to put one of these up in our garden. I tried a harness on him so I could at least have him out there with me a little bit on a leash but he freaked out and jumped backwards and sideways so I took it off. Don't they make an invisible cat fence like they do for dogs? Thanks again!

just4cats.com has the cat enclosures also. Since dh doesn't want to see a huge fenced area maybe you can make a short (2 ft. tall/wide) runner type fenced area for the cats, low to the ground. At least they could go outside, feel the air, touch the grass and watch the birds. My dh is building me a cat enclosure this summer for my inside cats. He isn't happy about it but...Could you screen in a patio for the cats? There is also a fencing made of green netting that the cats don't like to climb, it would blend in a garden better, again, a small area would be ok. Donna

You have to let him get used to the harness and leash gradually. Put the harness on him in the house and just let him wear it and get used to it.
