Experience with kitty UTI/Cystitis ?

Morning everyone,

I am wondering for those of you who've had kitties with urinary infections, if your cat drank enough water to flush out the bladder, or did you need to take the cat to the vet's for injectable fluids? I am not sure if Misha is drinking enough. She prefers dry food which doesn't help.

Any advice is much appreciated! :-)

Thanks for the suggestion Patrick! I didn't know about that, and I will be sure to ask as I'm thinking when I get home from work I'll be calling anyway to tell them Misha's not eating since her tummy is upset from these pills. (I hope they let me switch back to Baytril once a day). Glucosimine is much more natural and would (to my knowledge) not have the bad side effects.

Thanks again, too, for suggesting I bring her the pet fountain to drink from. She likes it!

Hugs,

Suzy

Yes, I had a kitty with chronic urinary tract infections. He never had crystals, but for some reason he would also have blood in his urine- I think they told me they thought he had an overactive bladder. He would drink tons which is why I never understood how it happened all the time, but you should try the fountain if you are able because it almost encourages them to drink. Sometimes they are just fascinated by it. You can use a little canned food in with her dry if you want just to get a little moisture with her food.

I also used to give them this cranberry stuff. I found it at a pet store-it's a liquid you can put in their food or their water. It seemed to help him a little, but who knows. Could have been my imagaination.

Thank you Gwenn! These infections can be a mystery, huh? LOL

I have heard of cranberry juice being good for bladder infections in people & animals. Maybe it's worth a try?

She loves her fountain which I have in her room, along with various other bowls of water around the house to encourage her to drink.

I have been mixing her new Science Diet chicken & rice dry with her old Science Diet Original dry to get her used to it. I don't think she likes canned, but the time she threw up was after eating the gravy from some Science Diet canned. I am afraid to give it to her again....maybe I'll try just a tiny, tiny bit for moisture purposes.

Thanks so much & have a great evening!

Thanks! I like both methods....she seems to like the fountain and she definitely likes the water dripping from the tap. Giggle! Aren't these cats adorable?

I don't think I've ever had a cat with this bladder problem. My cat that was just pts loved to drink from a running tap. I also have a cat that will throw up some can food. I had

read the running cat fountains filter had to be changed every so often depending on the number of cats that used it. Is this true? I couldn't afford it, with all the cats I have.

Guess my 2 dogs would want to use it too. I have a dog that is on the glus. supplement for hip dysp. problems. It is a great product. She's had no side effects on it, and it really helps her. Her's came from the vet and is a powder. donna

Hi Donna!

The filter package says to replace the filter every 60-90 days for just one animal. You're right that you'd have to replace it more often with multiple pets. Probably every 30 days at least. I kind of double filter the water. We have a Brita filter connected to our kitchen faucet and I use filtered water from that into the fountain, which then again gets more filtering..... I just love to spoil my babies. LOL

I can understand concern over costs. Sometimes you can find the filters on sale. I bought the fountain a few years ago for a Christmas gift for the cats. At the moment I'm letting Misha have it to herself just till she's over her infection.

I'm glad the glucosamine is helping your dog! My friend uses it for her dog with arthritis and it helps him, too. I know my father takes it himself and it helps. Good stuff!

Have a great weekend!
