A Friend For My Cat

I've had my cat for almost a year. I got her as a stray and now she's showing her wild kitty personality. She doesn't like to be held very much, she plays too rough and always scratches my hands up, she is scared of everyone she doesn't know.....hisses and arches up her back. With me, she is a loving companion and I couldn't ever give her up. I've always wanted a shih tzu puppy and I would like to adopt one from my town's humane society. But, I'm scared of how my cat will act in the presence of a new animal, a baby or not. She is very teritorial and I would hate to get this dog and my cat hate it and be mean to it. Does anyone have any experience in this area? What sounds logical?

Hi Letmedrown.
My first cat Missy lived the first 8 years of her life with my parents' Dachshund. When she died, my parents adopted a 9 month old Shih Tzu. At first Missy hissed at him and really disliked him invading her teritory. Over time (I agree with Leslie about how to introduce them), she grew quite fond of the dog and they even slept together. I'm sure your cat could grow to love (or at least tolerate) your new dog. When the dog grows up around the cat, he/she will be find around her.
Good luck!
