Friend's kitten was stuck in her couch..

... for 6 HOURS on Tuesday!

My friend just moved into a new apartment last weekend, and recently also got 2 kittens from the same litter. She has a huge sectional couch that she picked up used, with a pullout bed on one half, and two recliners on the other half. Well, the sofa bed part is against the wall, so the back of the recliner section is accessable (and reclinable - lol). Well, on Tuesday, my friend noticed that one of her kittens was missing. She tore the place apart for 6 hours, looking for her. She knocked on neighbours' doors, and one person told her, "check your couch, that happened to my kitten once, I bet she's in there somewhere".

Sure enough, when she got back to her apartment, she turned the recliner section forward, and heard a little thump. The fabric on the back of the recliners is loose, obviously so you can recline - she looked in and was able to see the little kitten balled up in a corner, inside the arm! She couldn't reach her though, so she ran to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and cut a huge slit in the side of the couch (she was beyond caring about the couch at this point), and reached in to pull her out. She was barely breathing or moving - my friend thought for sure that she had suffocated and died. But after a minute or so she opened her eyes and started moving! She drank lots of water, and by the next day, she was perfectly fine, and back to playing full force with her sister.

Last night I went over to her place with needle and thread, and I sewed up the gash she made (it looks great - you'd never know!), and I also sewed up the loose fabric at the back of the couch, temporarily, until the kittens are full grown.

You never know what dangers are lurking around your house for these little scamps!

That happen to us and Hermione just last week but with our arm chair. Lucky for me we able to fix the arm chair as good as new, too. I spray the loose part with apple bitter and she is now staying away from the chairs except to sleep in them. :)

That is scary! Smart neighbor though. We have 2 recliners. When I got my kittens (years ago) I wouldn't let anyone EVER open the chairs again. I was scared to death we would kill a kitten. We never open the chairs. Can't chance it. donna

I was thinking the exact same thing - they are worse than children! 1. They are so much easier to turn your back on, 2. They are small and can fit just about anywhere, and 3. They are far more curious than any children I've ever met!

I don't think I'd want the responsibility of a kitten again either - they are cute and cuddly and painfully adorable, but they just get into so much trouble! I'm used to my 7-year old Tasha - who barely lifts her head when you throw her a toy, and never gets into places she shouldn't. Besides, it felt pretty good to rescue an older cat from the shelter. I think I will do that again with any future cat(s) that come into my life.

I've got a 2 yr. old cat that prys open my dresser drawers and pulls EVERYTHING out. You walk in the room and there is a pile of clothes in the floor. She also will climb in and get behind the drawer. Her name is Shelley. She also has to sleep on your shoes if she finds any left out. She clawed several pair of my sandals. Now when I wear them, they were new, it feels like I have sand in my shoes. Yuck! donna

I couldn't cope with kittens any more, either. LOL. When my last cat died, & I was ready to adopt, I realized I hadn't had kittens since I was 29, & when this happened, I was 45! So I adopted 3 adults. I swear 3 adults are easier to care for than 1 kitten. LOL.

When my boys were kittens the apartment I lived in had a door over the electrical box in the bathroom. There was a 2nd wooden door but it did not have a latch. My adult cats used to like to climb in the wall. I used to have a small adult cat (about the size of a 6 month old kitten) and after watching the other cats go into the wall T decided it was her turn. Well she went into the wall and got scared my roommates and I were eating dinner and all the sudden the wall started meowing at us. I had to put my other cat into the wall to chase her out. T never went in the wall again. After that incident I decided to put a latch on the outter door when the kittens were born so I did not have to worry about them getting trapped in there. It's always interesting the suff you remember when a cat passes way. I miss T so much but I have learned to remember the good times and the funny things she did without crying now. T passsed away at the end of October. Sometimes it seems like my other two cats are still looking for her. I still find it interesting how Tegato has become so vocal since T passed away.
