Friend's kitten was stuck in her couch..

My friend just moved into a new apartment last weekend, and recently also got 2 kittens from the same litter. She has a huge sectional couch that she picked up used, with a pullout bed on one half, and two recliners on the other half. Well, the sofa bed part is against the wall, so the back of the recliner section is accessable (and reclinable - lol). Well, on Tuesday, my friend noticed that one of her kittens was missing. She tore the place apart for 6 hours, looking for her. She knocked on neighbours' doors, and one person told her, "check your couch, that happened to my kitten once, I bet she's in there somewhere".
Sure enough, when she got back to her apartment, she turned the recliner section forward, and heard a little thump. The fabric on the back of the recliners is loose, obviously so you can recline - she looked in and was able to see the little kitten balled up in a corner, inside the arm! She couldn't reach her though, so she ran to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and cut a huge slit in the side of the couch (she was beyond caring about the couch at this point), and reached in to pull her out. She was barely breathing or moving - my friend thought for sure that she had suffocated and died. But after a minute or so she opened her eyes and started moving! She drank lots of water, and by the next day, she was perfectly fine, and back to playing full force with her sister.
Last night I went over to her place with needle and thread, and I sewed up the gash she made (it looks great - you'd never know!), and I also sewed up the loose fabric at the back of the couch, temporarily, until the kittens are full grown.
You never know what dangers are lurking around your house for these little scamps!

How scarry.
I don't think I'd want the responsibility of a kitten again either - they are cute and cuddly and painfully adorable, but they just get into so much trouble! I'm used to my 7-year old Tasha - who barely lifts her head when you throw her a toy, and never gets into places she shouldn't. Besides, it felt pretty good to rescue an older cat from the shelter. I think I will do that again with any future cat(s) that come into my life.
