Guess What I Did?

I went to a cat show today and saw my vet there. I told her that my 3 older cats just won't accept or play with Misha. She said she knew an excellent Burmese breeder there that she herself bought a kitten from this past year. She said her cats were very loving and healthy. I went to see her two female kittens who were 4 1/2 months old. One of them was particularly gentle & sweet and let me hold her for a long time. My vet explained that maybe Misha would be accepted by a kitten with a similar energy level to hers. They could play together & snuggle and then she wouldn't keep trying to bother the older cats for attention. She said if it doesn't work out, I can always return the kitten to the breeder. It was expensive ($500....ouch!) but I took a risk and bought her. She is a Platinum Burmese. She is very playful and active. I am letting her sleep with us tonight so she can feel comfortable and not too lonely in her new environment. I tried putting her in a carrier so Misha could come sniff her. Misha seemed to like her, but the kitten just growled & hissed. Sheesh! I will take it slow and try to let them sniff each other like that for short sessions over the next days. If they get along I will be thrilled. If they don't, I'm prepared to return the kitten so she can find a better home, and Misha can just go back to being on her own. I really hope this works! Misha needs a friend.

I never considered Burmese before because I didn't want a cat with a flat face, but this kitten has a more normal face & nose and is therefore "pet quality" instead of "show quality". It doesn't matter to me a bit, and I think she'll have less eye/nose problems that way.

Here's a photo. She moves around so fast I couldn't get many in-focus pictures of her. LOL

Hugs,

Suzy

Thanks Jane! Poor Misha....dh told me to let the kitten out of the carrier, and boy did the fur fly! Misha layed on her back in a passive position and it was the kitten who was the aggressor! She growled, hissed and chased poor Misha around and then when they started to grab each other I had to break it up and put Misha in her room, and keep the kitten in with us. Not a good start. I will go back to putting the kitten in a carrier tomorrow and see how things go. Dh loves her since she'll cuddle up to him. She's great with people, but with poor Misha she's so far a stinker. LOL And here I bought her just to be friends with Misha. I will give it a few more days. If things don't improve, I'll have no choice but to return her. :-( Keep your fingers crossed. She really is so cute, I hope we can keep her.

Sweet Dreams,

Suzy

(If we keep her you'll have to make me a siggy with 5 kitties. LOL)

It takes time for kitties to come around and tolerate each other.

Thanks everyone! Jane, I think (and hope) you're right. I was introducing them too fast. I guess I just didn't want to get attached to her in case I had to return her. I wanted to see if there was any friendliness between them. The new kitty (yet to be named) slept all night with us. She loves people! In the morning I let her back into the carrier for Misha (who missed us) to come in and see her. The growling & hissing from the kitten started again. I let her out briefly and she once again chased Misha away. I guess Burmese love to be top cat? LOL She's fearless....giggle. I then (at dh's request) brough Boots in to be with her. Boots is more assertive than Misha and just hissed right back at the kitten. That seemed to be enough to calm her down. They both layed down on either side of dh. Boots has now left and Misha is back in here. It's better now since the kitten is sleeping up next to me and Misha is down by my feet. It's a start!

One weird thing....the kitten rolls around in her litter box like a chinchilla taking a dust bath. The one time I saw her actually "go" she meowed at the same time....don't know if she was in pain? She only has eaten 3 kibbles of her kitten food and only a few licks of water since we brought her home. I don't know if she's just nervous or what. We had a vet appointment at 2pm for Thomie's check-up, but under the new circumstances, I think we'll take the kitten for a check-up instead and bring Thomie next week. I want to make absolute sure the kitten is healthy.....I feel bad that I've already let 2 of our cats near her without knowing for sure she's not contageous with anything. I have some measure of comfort knowing my own vet was the one who spayed her and has taken care of her in her 4 1/2 months of life. I would think she would have already checked her over for diseases. I'll still take her anyway for a check up and since I know the breeder did not give her a rabies shot. If we do indeed keep her, I will also get her microchiped.

I will keep you all posted on what happens....

I had to giggle over Leslie's warning about Burmese since she has one....I see they are very athletic and do jump high. LOL I will make sure anything dangerous/breakable stays securely hidden. ;-)

Thanks Leslie for the advice! I could use advice also on a good name.

Hugs,

Suzy

Just got back from the vet's. I had the Burmese kitten's check up. She's FIV/FeLV negative and no parasites. YIPPEE!!!! I did not have her get any immunizations today. I want to wait a good week to see if she gets along with the other cats before deciding about keeping her for sure (knowing me & dh....we will be totally in love with her by then!) When I'm sure she'll stay with us, I'll then go ahead and have her other shots and get her microchiped. I found out she was spayed just last week by the vet who fills in when my vet is out of town. I got her to eat some canned food this afternoon (since she's ignored her dry) and now she's napping with dh. The vet said she only recommends giving kitten food for 6 months, then switching to adult food which is lower in calories & fat.

Still looking for a name......she is so cute. Misha gave her a little bath upon her return home from the vet's. LOL (Then they had another wrestling match). The vet said they'll work it out and not to worry. I hope she's right. I just want my Misha happy at last.
