Help! with pregnant cat

Good morning, Im new on this board, but not new to other message boards. I already have two male cats, Sam and Qunuk(Eskimo name for snowflake...he's a white cat)who are my wonderful babies....about a month ago while outside late at night I noticed a cat across the street just rolling around on the sidewalk and meowing so I went in and got a can of food and coaxed her over to me, which she did hesitantly but once she got over to me she was rubbing all over me and loving on me, so,of course I instantly fell in love. To make a long story short she belong to my neighbor across the street and he claims that she got out one night and he hasnt been able to get her back in and I could have her if I wanted. I brought her to the vet that following Monday only to find out that she is pregnant. Not a problem, actually, we are kind of excited about witnessing the birth. Okay, so that's the history, I have no idea when she will give birth, she is nesting somewhat, I thought the vet said she was due in 2-3 weeks but now Im wondering if she meant that she was 2-3 pregnant, as she hasnt had any kittens yet. Now, finally, my question...about 10 days ago I noticed a small amount of yellowish, thick discharge from her vagina...I wiped it away with a wet washcloth, as she loves to sleep on our bed and that's kind of gross....I called the vet and they didnt seem too concerned and really didnt say much about it just saying that it didnt mean she was in labor or anything. I havent noticed it since until just this morning, again, a small amount. I dont know if it has an odor or anything because Im not getting to close to it to check to see if it does smell ( I do have my limits....), so if anyone has any clue as to what this may be I would appreciate it. I've checked online and again dont find too much info. Also, any advice for the upcoming labor would be great. Thank you, Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

We had a cat who adopted us in April and lived in our sunroom for a while. One night in May she got out and guess what? She got herself pregnant. She gave birth to 3 beautiful kittens on July 16th. It was my first time with this also and I turned to this site and my sister for help and info.

One important thing to note is you want her to have a safe and secure place to have her kittens. She will become a lioness when it comes to keeping her babies safe, so I would find a spot away from your male cats. ( I also have two male cats and I have kept them separated from mom and the babies.) Find a nice size box and lay down some newspaper and towels. Cut a door in it so mom can get in and out easily and put a litter pan, food and water nearby. Every cat is different, but mine became very upset when we got to near the box after the babies were born. It was about 3 weeks before we were allowed to pick them up. Good luck!!

What a wonderful thing to take her in.

I agree. Double check with the vet. If it is infection, it could get on the kittens as they are born. espically the eyes.

Dear Stephanie,

My pregnant stray cat presented the exact same discharge when I found her "expecting". The vet said cats have something called a "mucus plug" it basically helps seal the entrance to the uterus from infection. When there is a sudden brief flow of discharge, it can be the plug coming out as a prelude to labor. However a small amount of extra mucus can sometimes ooze out and is not a problem unless it is black or greenish or smells really bad. I got this advice from my vet and rushed home to hover around waiting for babies, but it took another week and a half for my kitty to have hers...four healthy kittens. During that final two weeks, cats may also gain a lot of size and bulge quite dramatically if the litter is more than one or two. I was on tenderhooks waiting for the great event. I had made up a nesting box early on, which she never even seems to look twice at. Spent all her time curled up on my bed. Then one evening I noticed she had been missing a little while and found her calmly having her third kitten in the box!

Good Luck!

Dee
