How to keep kitty inside the yard?

Hello everyone.

My 5 year old cat has lived in an apartment all his life. A few months ago we moved into our first house with a tiny backyard. For 3 months, I let him play in the yard, and now he finally figured out how to climb the fence. I don't want him wandering into the street, but I want him to enjoy the yard.

Do you have any suggestions for keeping him inside the backyard? I would like him to enjoy it once in a while but I want to keep him safely inside the fence.

I would greatly appreciate any advice!

Holly

Thanks for the quick reply cl-catwoman. I understand what you are saying. He has always been an indoor cat and his safety is the most important concern for me. I guess I could try the harness and leash but he seems like too much of a spaz for that. Really, he should just be happy he has a bigger house now instead of a little apartment.

thanks again!

Here is a site that has lots of cat fence options. You have to type all of this in(hsus.org/ace/13937) just4cats.com has outdoor enclosures you build, its on this site, catfencein or something similiar on this site has a type of fencing that fits on top of your current fence, its slanted so the cat can't go over. Lots to explore on the hsus site, but as I said, you must put the ace/13937 with hsus.org to get to the listings. Good luck. Maybe you can come up with something that will work for you. donna

I think you will have to do a leash and watch so he does not get dangled!

Awesome Donna! I will check that out right away. It would be so great if he could spend some time in the yard. My yard is small, so one of these options may be manageable. Thanks so much. He whines to go out all the time and loves it out there so much.

Thank you! My yard is so small that would not cost much to add some sort of barrier to the fence. My little man would be so happy. I'm afraid he would be miserable with a leash, though. My older cat would be fine with a leash, but not the younger rascal.

I hope you find something. I love the cat enclosures you build. petsproof.com sells window screen cats can't tear out of. I have it on my windows. I have 15 cats, 5 inside-only, they don't want out or are feral, extremely shy ect...but I would like to screen in a portion of my side porch and let them go out the window to the porch. Can't use the fencing for this because of flys and mosq. Would like the cat enclosure, but already have the yard fenced in - in 3 areas, daycare and 2 dog areas. Husband already complains about that. Its great you have a smaller yard, maybe you can afford the cat fence-in or come up with your own ideas. Good luck. donna
