How to keep kitty inside the yard?

Hello everyone.

My 5 year old cat has lived in an apartment all his life. A few months ago we moved into our first house with a tiny backyard. For 3 months, I let him play in the yard, and now he finally figured out how to climb the fence. I don't want him wandering into the street, but I want him to enjoy the yard.

Do you have any suggestions for keeping him inside the backyard? I would like him to enjoy it once in a while but I want to keep him safely inside the fence.

I would greatly appreciate any advice!

I appreciate the website info. Maybe the enclosure is a good way to go too. My little man will be so happy if I can set something up soon for him. He is such a whiner now, at the back door!

Hi Kelly, it's nice to see you back. I remember you from a long time ago.

I have 2 female cats and the only time they are allowed outside is when I am there to supervise them. I try to make sure they get some backyard hours several times a week because I think its good for animals to get fresh air and a chance to explore the great outdoors. Once my cats ran off in the dark so that I couldnt catch them. Vera was gone for 2 nights and one day and I was very worried about her but she did learn her lesson about running off. SHe found out that there isn't a steady supply of food and water for her "out there", so now when she gets to go outside she is very good about staying on the property. Sometimes she climbs up a tree and jumps onto the roof and then I have to go get a ladder and get her down because she is afraid to climb down but that is the worst thing that happens when I let the kitties outside. Hope you find a way to let your cats continue to enjoy nature as God intended! Iri
