Do I need for 4 cats? I have a Van Ness closed in one for Missy and Paka and have open one for Lilly. With me getting a kitten, will I need another? Where will I put it?

The general rule of thumb with multiple cats is one litter box per cat plus one extra. This is not always feasible in some living arrangements but the more you have the less likely they will have future problems with urinating/defacating outside the box, etc. I have 2 cats, so I have 2 litter pans (up until last summer I only had one but had to add another one when Pudd started to require fluids for his renal failure, he pees up a storm)...

I only have two cats but following the 2 cats=2 boxes rule is just not feasible in my apartment so I got one of those Littermaid boxes and it works fine. They are very happy to not have to deal with a dirty box ever! The only thing of course is that I have to empty the receptacle every three days or so but that's okay coz it keeps my kitchen smelling better.

I guess the key is, the more cats you have, the more often you'll have to clean up their boxes. So whether you have 1 box and clean it 3 times a day, or you have three boxes and clean it up once a day, it's kinda the same thing. I guess it just depends on your cats' preferences. I've heard of some cats wanting their privacy even from other cats when they go to the bathroom. Luckily, mine are shameless!

Thank You so much for your post! I have 3 litter boxes now. I guess that will do for 4 cats. :)

I used to have two, but then my husband made our own box out of a 50gal Rubbermaid box with a lid. He cut a hole in the side and they love it.
