How much do I feed?

When Gabby cat first showed up about 2 months ago (it may be 3 months now), she was skin and bones so I'd give her a bowl of food and let her eat as much as she wanted to. Now, she seems to be getting plumper. I've read the cat food bag and the guidelines are sort of vague for how much to feed. Gabby weighs about 6 1/2 pounds and the bag says to feed anywhere from 1/2 cup to a cup and a quarter a day. I was giving her about a half cup in the morning and a half cup at night and she'd leave a few pieces. I cut her back to 1/3 cup in morning and 1/3 cup at night and now she eats it all and follows me around begging for more. Of course I give in but how much do you think I should be feeding her? Enough to leave a few pieces or enough for her to finish it all? I don't want her to be hungry but I know it's easier to prevent being overweight than it is to lose weight (I know that firsthand lol)

TIA

The general rule of thumb is if you are feeding dry food solely, take the requirement and cut it back by at least 1/3. If you can, feed some canned food which is so much better for them than the dry. Cats do not require carbohydrates in their diet yet dry food is made of mostly carbohydrates which cause fat kitties. Canned food is all protein which is 100% all they need. My own cats eat canned food only and as a treat, I give them cut up chicken (Purdue makes the "short cuts" that are already pretty cut up and convenient).

Thank you Cat! I completely forgot to mention that I give her 1/2 can of cat food

I would cut back on the dry and maybe give her 1/2 can in the am and 1/2 at night.

I agree with Jeanne - 1/2 can twice a day and cut way back (if not altogether) on the dry. Good luck!

I'm with Cat on this one and optimum nutrition is vitally important for our animals.

Thank you Christina. I may have to increase the canned amount. She tried to get into the dog food bag last night- do ya think that's a hint ;)

Thank you Lynn. The only reason I'd want to keep a little kibble in there is that every once in a while, dh and I go camping overnight- never any longer than that, and I can leave Gabby some kibble in a bowl for her to eat. I'm only putting a small amount of dry in her canned right now and she really likes it.
