How to tell if cat is neutered?

Does anyone know how to tell if a male cat is neutered? We adopted a stray when he was about six months old, and now he's a year old. I keep thinking he's going to start spraying and displaying other Tomcat behavior, but he hasn't. (We had an appointment to get him neutered and he ran away that day, then I had a baby, etc. etc.)
So this is probably really gross but I would think that if he weren't neutered, his testicles would be pretty big, but they're the same size they were when we got him.
I'm starting to think he was neutered before we got him, but how can I be sure?

You are right, if he wasn't neutered you would see his testicles.

Oh he came back the next day. Its just that he was gone after midnight and he had to have nothing my mouth, and we had no idea if he'd eaten anything so he couldn't have the surgery.
He definitely looks like a boy, he just has small testicles. He doesn't have jowls, and he's very sweet, not aggressive at all with other cats. We have a neutered male and they get alone really well.
So I don't know what to think now! I would think he'd be spraying by now.

If you don't mind feeling to see if there is anything there, then that would be the best way. It seems like the testicles should be a little smaller than a marble.
