I have 14 cats

It started several years ago...My daughters in-laws didn't spay/neuter. I raised 14 kittens and placed in adoption, then one more showed up. Because she didn't have siblings to play with she slept, played, ate with me. I kept her. Then a neighbor died and his cat moved in. Then we found a frighteded kitten in the engine of a car in town. Fine - everyone is spayed and our home is happy. Then 2 neighbors brought home 2 kittens and then abandoned them. Fine neutered them. Then another neighbor moved away and left the cat. Great, he was already neutered. Then we joined the Humane Society. We have to feed outside, so we aquired 3 skunks and 2 racoons too! Also in the past 5 years we have captured/spayed/released 3 feral females. Of course they all had kittens first. We placed about (it's hard to remember exactly) 14 of them in adoption, but ended up with 4 of the kittens because they were too wild to go into adoption. Another neighbor moved and left their old cat. We kept her well for 3 years, but finally had to put her to sleep, she wasn't enjoying life anymore - we cried. I can't keep track anymore of who comes and who goes, but right now we have 14. We have a cat door, so even wild cats sleep inside (the temp drops to freezing where we live) even though we have the garage door open slightly for them. Right now real-estate is high where we live, and we'd sell, but what would the wild cats do? You probably won't believe me when I tell you that most of the time the house smells fine, but sometimes when it's snowing or raining everyone poops in the box. I don't know how this happened to me, I'm not really as weird as I sound, believe me, if I heard you telling this story, I'd think you were weird. Any cleaning tips or specific products to buy (the answers are always so vague) that can help with the occastional spraying? It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does - eveyone (the cats that is) sprays the same spot.

Hi Tutumele and *WELCOME* to Cats!

WOW...14 is a rather large number of cats to have - I must say, you have a huge heart to care so much. The best products to use (and the other posters here will back me up on this one!) are Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle to help "neutralize" any odors that are lurking around AND I highly suggest using Feliway spray or now they have a new thing where it's a plug in pheramone releaser, it helps with territorial marking tremendously.

Good luck with that and please, if you have time - tell us more about your furbabies!

Wow...that's alot of cats..but I have to say, if I had the space, I probably would have that many. And bless your heart for taking care of them all.

I have found that Natures Miracle works the best for cleaning areas soiled by pets. They have a cat formula which is designed specifically to break down the enzymes of cat urine and erase any odors from spraying. It is supposed to keep the animal from going back to the same spot b/c once the enzymes are broken down, the odor will not linger.

I have used it on my carpet, my fabric chairs and sometimes I wash the floor near their litterpan w/ it (just in case the boys had bad aim that day). It doesn't have a perfume-y smell, it just smells clean, and it's completly safe for pets.

HTH! - good luck

Hi,

Welcome to the board. No u r not crazy for having a big heart. There is a cl on the think like a cat board who has 17 kitties who are all inside kitties. She is pretty cool. I wouldn't feel bad for being a loving furmom. Please, tell us about your kitties. U probably have a lot of knowledge that might be able to help out other furmoms. Enjoy your kitties.

Hi TUTUMELE. *WELCOME* to Cats. 14 cats is a lot of cats, but when you have such a big heart, I guess that's what happens. I wouldn't be able to turn any of them away either.

Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution, as the others have mentioned work great. I have also had trouble with sprayers and it gets rid of the smell. Get the formula for cat urine and spray.

It's really hard to relocate strays. Maybe there is someone in your neighborhood that could at least feed them and provide shelter for them if you move?

Thanks for posting here on the Cats board and I hope to see you back.

Hugs,

Leslie (cl-lcni)
