I'm going to KILL MY CAT

I have an 18mo old cat that will not stop chewing things up. I swear... it's like having a dog. She's chewed up the toes of my nice shoes. She's chewed off 5 slats of my mini blinds. She's chewed up the edges of my coffee table. Now, I know that some chewing is natural, but this is getting ridiculous.

How can I make her stop???

Sounds like she is bored. Could you possibly get her a friend(cat) to play with? This should really help. Put an old cardboard box out for her to explore. Does she have a cat tree to play on? Walmarts has a cheap one for $35. One of my cats hangs from it, having a ball. Plastic practice golf balls are very cheap and my cats tote/play with them. donna

I honestly don't know how she could be bored. I have two cats. This one, and one who's about 6 months older. They get along perfectly. Always playing and cleaning each other. They have about 20 different types of toys to play with... including fuzzy mice, bouncy balls, and feathers on a stick. AND I have a fish that they both love to sit and stare at. If I didn't know any better, I'd assume she was teething... or losing her baby teeth. But she's too old for that, isn't she?

Has anyone used catnip spray or something to keep cats off furniture? Does it work on other things besides furniture?

Try posting on the Think Like a Cat board as well. Pam Johnson-Bennet, who runs it, is a feline behaviorist with many years of experience. She seems to have a solution for everything!

I think the catnip would attract your cat to the furniture. Your post with all the info sounds like you take great care of your cats. I have a 2 yr. old cat that is a shoe junkie. She doesn't eat the shoes, but will lie on any she finds and go to sleep. The bad thing she does is claw the inside of my sandals. It feels like sand when you wear them. That is my fault for leaving the shoes out!!! The only other thing my cats would destroy is playing with newspaper and papers on the coffee table. My kids could honestly say the cat ate their homework!!! Good luck. donna

I agree that you may find a good suggestion on the Think Like a Cat board.

Thanks everyone for the great advice! I've already made an appointment for Onyx (she's a little black cat) to see the vet. I posted to the Think Like a Cat board, and was advised to spend more time paying attention to her. I've also put all my shoes in boxes, pulled up the blinds (in case she was chewing them because they were in her way when she wanted to sit in the window) and bought some Bitter Apple for the coffee table. Hopefully, this will work. I just really hope that she's bored and doesn't have a dental problem. I guess the vet will let me know!

Thanks again!!

I have a kitty that I swear is a dog but in a cats body. I think that he's a "catdog" or a "dogcat". He loves to chew and eat everything. I tried one of the chew bones for dogs but he wouldn't have nothing to do with it.
