Introducing a new kitty

I don't know what other cat board to post this on.
We have a 3 year old male tuxedo cat and have adopted (but we can take her back if we have to) a new young girl kitty. They told us she's around 6-8 months old.
We know about all of the gradual, smell swapping etc type introduction methods. We read about them on the net and on the paperwork the foster group gave us. It's been a long time, maybe 20 years, since I had multiple cats. We had a female cat and a female dog for 15 1/2 years. In that case, I introduced the kitten at 6 weeks, to the sheltie who was 1 year at that time. They were great friends almost instantly.
Anyone else have experience introducing a "kitten" to a cat? I know in the past, I didn't do anything special or thought out. It was the old way of just bringing in the kitten and somehow it all worked out. It's been too long to remember any real specifics.
The adoption was yesterday, and we kept the girl kitty in a spare room with all the essentials. She was really shy yesterday, today we let her check out the house while the male was in our closed bedroom. Then we put him into the carrier, and let her walk up to it. Of course, they both hissed.
When will it be OK to let them meet completely unrestricted? I know no matter what there will be some chasing and hissing. Hopefully, that will be all.
