Kitty's swollen belly - advice?

I'm new here, and hope someone might be able to shed some light on why my cat's stomach is suddenly so bloated.
I've read up on it a little bit, but most diseases I've come across include loss of apetite, fainting etc.
A little Kitty history:
He's a stray I took in 6 years ago. I have a dog, who adores him. They clean each other. Five years ago, Kitty was clipped by a car, and miraculously survived (so I'm told by the vets) with some minor paralysis of the right side of his face. (he hasn't flicked his right ear since he was hit) He also lost all but 2 teeth. After 2 weeks of hand-feedings every 4 hours and a crazy vet bill, he turned into a super-affectionate indoor cat terrified of the outdoors. He's a real baby.
As for Kitty's eating habits, he's a pig and can't seem to eat enough. He eats twice a day. His litter box activities are normal. He's extremely boney, (I think he's a senior Kitty) except for his stomach which protrudes quite a lot. It doesn't hurt him when I touch it, or even press it gently. He seems to like it.
I'm wondering if anyone here has heard of such a thing, and if so, what is it? A hair ball blockage? Should I rush him into the vet? Is there something I can do for him myself?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any help!
