My cat won't be coming home

Today when I went to see him I was not prepared. From the time I talked to the vet to the time I had went to visit he said he had gotten even more lethargic. They feel that his liver is shutting down. I stayed about an hour and in that hour he never made a move of his own. When I moved him he raised his head but slowly dropped it back down. He didn't meow, he didn't purr, he did nothing. He did seem to enjoy being held and did seem to recognize me, but he is extremely sick.
The vet still isn't sure what is going on, only that his liver isn't working. He said he wouldn't survive exploratory surgery so going in to see what is up is out of the question. Mister has always been healthy, no health problems at all. A bout with tape worms, and that has been it. He was fine last week, only this weekend did I notice he wasn't eating as much.
So, tomorrow morning I am going to see him again and if there has been no improvement I will have Mister put to sleep. We just lost Oreo in October. I haven't even been able to bury his urn, just not ready yet. Now this? We're going from a family with three cats to a family with one cat in 5 months. Just not fair.
Mister is a terrific cat, so affectionate that it reaches the point of being annoying at times. He hasn't a aggressive bone in his body. He never scratched anyone, never nipped at anyone, dealt with my kids handling him without a word. He was such a mellow guy, even tempered, gentle. The most beautiful cat, was siamese tabby mix, but had all the markings of siamese, blue eyes, only faint stripes on his tail.
I'm hoping that overnight some miracle happens. I dont want to have to do this again.

I wish I knew what to say, but I do not. Every time I read a sad story on the board I just am at a loss. I guess deep down I feel and wish I could say something that would make everyone feel better. I know that just is not realistic. Though I am far from a person who is good with words I will give what I can a shot….
You are right, it is unfair that Mister has to suffer like this. Hopefully he will manage up the strength to show signs of improvement. Hopefully his liver function will restart. Be certain that I will be thinking about him and hoping for the best, as I am sure everyone on the board will be doing. I wish that he was at my vet, as I always visit with the animals in the back when I am bringing one of our cats in or visiting one of our cats who is in the hospital.
I will light a candle at home tonight for Mister. Do try to think positive thoughts though. I am a firm believer that we help shape the environment around us by our actions, thoughts and beliefs. Try to keep some hope in your heart and visualize Mister’s strength and liver function returning. I know it is hard to be positive when all is so wrong around with the one(s) you love (I am going through that right now myself).
At minimum please tell Mister that I am pulling for him, and give him a kiss and little head rub from me.
Know we are all here for you to chat with if you need it. I am always willing to listen.
Hugs,
David
