Well, thanks for talking me through leaving Bruce (tho considering the name Barnaby)alone at home. Last night he greeted me at the door but he wasn't as adamant about hanging around me. And this morning he was playing with a ball while I was leaving the apt. So I think he's getting used to how things are going to be.

Course, now that I feel ok about this, I have to worry about something else. Bruce/Barnaby has FLUTD (or at least had a bout of it.) I knew this when I adopted him. I literally went against everything my head was telling me and adopted him despite the fact that he was anxious around me and was still recovering from antibiotics. I want to make sure he stays healthy. And plan on talking to the vet once his prescription diet is over. But I would like to prevent this from happening to him again, and everything I'm reading says that it can recur over and over again. So far I've been monitoring him and watering his food. He seems to be recovering pretty well.

I'm just a big worrywart and want to hear what people think about this!

My Tasha had FLUTD (struvite crystals) when we adopted her, only we didn't know she had it. We couldn't figure out why this full-grown adult cat was peeing in front of her box, rather than in it. Someone on this board suggested she may have a urniary problem, so off to the vet she went. That's when we discovered she had the crystals.

The vet put her on a prescription diet, and within a few weeks she started using her box normally again. The vet wanted us to keep her on the prescription food for at least 8 weeks (it was called Medi-Cal Dissolution Formula). After that, we were to feed her a strict diet of Medi-Cal Preventative Formula for the rest of her life. They make it in dry, as well as wet, and we can only buy it from the veterinarian. It costs more than regular store-brand food, but her health is obviously worth it. It's been nearly a year now and she has not had a reoccurence. She's a very happy healthy kitty (who BTW sleeps quite contendedly all day while DBF and I are at work).

Medi-Cal is a Canadian brand, but I've heard other folks here on the board talking about a formula by Hills which has the same preventative effect. Talk to your vet - diet is the number one way to prevent FLUTD.

Science diet does have special foods for the crystals as I used it for my dog . It was called C/D
