Not sure I'm in the right place?

There is, what I assume to be, a stray cat who has been coming in our yard. I've seen him/her a few times in the past few months.
It's been cold the past few nights so I put a wool blanket out there and some food. I've seen him/her eating and when I went back to check last night he was sleeping on the blanket.
I left it there until tonight and when I got up at 1am there he was asleep again. So I woke him and gave him more food and tried to tent the blanket so he could snuggle inside.
My question is this- what are the chances we can make him our pet? He looks pretty healthy and dh is convinced he belongs to someone. I am not convinced because why would he keep showing up at our back door?
We have alot going on right now as I am scheduled for a c-section on Thursday so I wouldn't be able to do this until Monday or so.
Before I bring him in the house and around my children and cat I'd want to get him completely checked out by the Vet. So I'd have to catch him too.
Any ideas or suggestions or should I just leave well enough alone?
