Not sure why it smells...

Last night DH and I noticed a strong odor in our living room. It smells like cat pee. Its odd because it sort of comes and goes. I got on my hands and knees trying to pinpoint if it was on the carpet somewhere - I couldn't find it. The smell was more at 4 to 5 feet off the floor.
Zipper is always good about using his litter pan. I tend to take note of how much I scoop out of his pan - and yesterday was pretty much the same as usual. I don't think he would have peed on the floor - his pan is down the hall in another room.
Also, Zipper's litter pan never smells of cat pee - even though most of it makes it into the litter, some hits the back side of the pan (it has a hooded cover so it always stays in the pan) - I would imagine if it was him, then the pee in there should smell too.
I thought maybe it was the ferals/strays that I feed outside - that one of them might be marking the side of our house near a window. So, this morning before work, I went outside to see if I could smell anything - and I could not.
I'm thinking of getting a black light to detect any pee on the carpet if the smell doesn't go away. I still don't think Zipper would have peed in there - and since his pan had the usual amount of pee clumps, that's even more reason to think he did not pee in there.
Any ideas?

Gee Zook I don't know either. Usually when you get down and smell the carpet if theres pee, you'll know it.
At least if I can determine its not Zipper, I'll feel a whole LOT better.
Since Zipper is acting like his usual self - running around the house like a nut, watching birdies, sleeping, drinking, eating, peeing and otherwise - I'm sure he's fine. I called my vet's office and they thought the UV light was a very good idea. They told me to call them and make an appointment if I find out its Zipper.
I may have to move the food I put out for the strays further out in my yard - and away from the house. Right now its on the patio under the roof right next to our house. It was convenient for me - but I can deal with having to go further outside in the cold and dark just to make sure they get something to eat.
