hi! i posted here about a month ago about getting my new cat used to his surroundings with another cat who already lived there. well, its going great and they seem to be getting ablong pretty well. just sometimes they hiss at eachother and chase eachother around the apartment. sometimes i cant tell if they're playing or really fighting. they paw at eachother , but dont really hurt eachother, so i think they're playing, but i just dont know. how can i tell if theyre playing with eachother or fighting? thanks for any input.

thank you for your reply! i do let them. sometimes i yell when they get too loud (since i do live in an apartment) but other than that, i let them do that, so they can get to know eachother and find out eachother's tolerance levels and such.

My 2 cats are 2 years apart, and have been hissing/batting/chasing like that on occassion for most of their 6 yrs together. They really like to do it now that we moved from an apartment to a condo, and they have more room to run. I'm pretty sure mine are playing. If they get too loud or agitated I just wave my arms and get their attention to break it up. (I do that, because the older cat is deaf. I can yell all I want, and she won't hear me.)

Mine have been doing it for all of their 8 years together. I know they're not playing. Surely dominance has been established by now. :( I wish Moxie would leave Daisy alone. I feel sorry for Daisy. :(

My two female cats have been doing that since I got them (about a year ago). They don't seem to really hurt each other but sometimes when they start to get ugly I tell them "Ya'll play nice" or "okay LADIES, that's enough!" (as if they care). I have to compare them to 2 tomcats in my neighborhood. Now those 2 are actually FIGHTING. They literally rip large chunks of flesh off one another. Their bodies are scarred from their many previous catfights. My cats don't even come close to that. So unless your cats are actually drawing blood or unless one lives in terror of the other, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Iri
