Pooped twice...

Columbo has pooped twice in the house other than his litterbox. The first must have been during the night while he was exploring the house because it was downstairs. He's been reserving his venturing out for night time so he can trek around without the girls getting excited. So I didn't think anything of it, and subsequently didn't mention it to the vet during his appointment yesterday morning. However, last night, in our bedroom (his litterbox was ten feet away), he pooped on the dog's pillow. It wasn't an urgent thing. DH and I watched him "fluff" the pillow, I thought he was trying to make it comfy to sleep on. He worked for about two or three minutes before we realized he was starting to squat to poop, and by then it was too late.

Is this a form of marking his territory, or could there be a problem? Both time it was loose, not super runny, but not solid either. I chalked that up to new environment/routine.

Any thoughts? He's since gone in the litterbox.

PS. We have a covered litterbox and although he was going in it with the door flap on, we took it off last night in case he just doesn't like that.
