How can you keep cat scratches off of your table besides declaw. I think he uses the table as a launching pad to get on other things like the washer or portable dishwasher. I do not want him on the table but rarely catch him. I just see the results. Riley is probably a spring kitten. He was dumped this fall at my house. I was not looking for a cat as I already have one who is 7 or 8 and not very happy now and a dog who will not leave either cat alone. He is very unusal looking and beautiful. I can not post pics or I would show you one.

First, the scratches are most likely from the back paws left from their back paws hitting the table as he launches himself off the table and onto the other object. Keep his nails nice and trimmed. Most people forget about trimming the back paws, and in my experience these are the nails that do the most damage (just ask my poor railing from when they jump onto the banister!)

You can also try to put down aluminum foil on the table for a while. They don't like the noise of the foil rustling. After a while, he won't jump from the table because he'll want to avoid the noise.

Hi-

I sewed a thick table pad to put on my coffee table. I am thinking about making some for the end tables too. Now when the cats are chasing each other around the house and use the tables as "launching pads" they are digging their claws into the pad instead of the table. When you are having company over you can take the pads off. Iri

If you don't mind him on the washer or dishwasher maybe you can put a chair by one of them so he can launch from there instead of the table. Donna

Hi Jo Ann,

I have to first thank you for considering other methods before deciding to declaw.

Jo Ann, you can get Soft Paws (soft claw covers) from almost any pet store.
