I have finally decided to get a cat of my own but not sure what I need to know. I don't know if I want a new kitten or full grown cat. Which do you think is best and why?

Welcome to cats and kittens....

First you need to think about your lifestyle. Kittens are cute, but they grow up quick and they take much more work. You need to keep them active and engaged or they get bored. And keep in mind - everyone wants kittens so they get adopted faster.

You can also look at what I call the "teenagers" - the 6 to 10 month old range. This is nice cause they tend to get overlooked, are past the tiny stage but are still active and LOTS of fun.

Adults are great too....depending on the age, they are not quite as active though they still need to be kept busy and active to avoid obesity.

Check petfinder.com and local rescues. Rescues give you an advantage - already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and vetted (for the most part). Which is a deal when you consider vet bills. Most will have you fill out an application and sign a contract.

So, it is about your activity level and lifestyle. Are you looking for an active cat that you can play with and will be busy? Are you looking for someone who wants to keep you company and is a little more quiet? Be sure to talk to the staff and/or volunteers at your local rescue. They will ask questions and try to match you up with the right cat for you.

Keep us posted on what you decide.....and good luck!!

Welcome to Cats and Kittens.  That's wonderful you decided to get a cat or kitten. Kittens are so adorable and fun.  You almost have to kitten proof your house for awhile as they can get into things.  Young adult cats are a little easier as long as they don't come with behavioral problems.

You should just go to your local shelter and see what they have. Usually the right cat or kitten will find you.

Please let us know what you decide.

Really ONLY you can decide.
I have had both and I think when you find yours you will know...:)...
It's meant to be!
I got my dd one for her tenth birthday and he was almost a year old and had been neutered and had his shots.
He was an awesome addition to our family.
Loved my dd and ds and his former owner knew she made the right choice when she gave him to us.
He was loved...<3...
I have two right now Mother and Daughter and I got the Mother when she was a kitten...she is the Queen and her Daughter the Princess...;)...my brother has two of the kittens although now cats...;)...
My brother has two brothers, he wanted them to have company, and another friend of mine also took two when she wanted a kitten.
Sometimes I think you will just know that is what is right for you and your Lifestyle and personality.
Every day ours bring us Joy!
Whatever you decide you will to...:)...
