Un-matting long hairs?

Hi all,

I have a problem that's results from me being a bad cat-mom. Orlando's once-fluffy black tail has become really matted. I brush him only occasionally and I know I should have been grooming him more, I guess I was used to the lack of grooming needed with Sparkle, who's a short-hair. Is there anyway for me to "de-mat" his tail? I would hate to cut off the matted fur, but it looks like that may be the only way. If I cut off some of the clumps of fur, will it grow back? Any suggestions would be appreciated...Beyond that, I am brushing the rest of my little man's fur on a more frequent basis.

My mom has a long hair and when her hair gets matted she uses a comb to gently comb out as much as she can. If that dosen't work she uses a pair of manicuring scissors (I think that's what they are called. They're little scissors you use to cut your fingernails) and gently cuts into the mat and then brushes it again. She does this until it is gone. She doesn't just cut it out, but if it's that bad that might be the only solution. I'm sure his fur will grow back! Hope this helps!

Before you give your kitty a haircut, you might try a copule of other things so he's not embarassed to be seen.

I used to use a seam ripper very carefully to cut out mats and before that use a dander spray that is also a detangler,I get it at Petco

Thank you for your suggestions...I'll try the mat comb and detangler spray first...Orlando's so handsome with his fluffy black fur, and I want to preserve as much as I can.
