I wonder what percentage of indoor only cats in multi cat households of FELV negative cats ever get leukemia? I have to really ask why the vaccine is necessary. My vet insists that she gives it to her own cats and that it won't hurt....but I still wonder. I think at this point I will never again get the shot for Misha (since they give it annually.... she did put it in the left rear, by the way) and will not give our new kitten that shot. (The Burmese breeder doesn't give it to her cats either). How many people (percentage roughly) in your practice have their cats immunized for leukemia for indoor only cats? Is my vet strange for suggesting this vaccine to her clients?
Thank you so very much again for your help.
Suzy
Yes, that is a reaction from the FELV vaccine - we see it very often, lethargy/not eating...kind of keeping to themselves.
Can cats catch FeLV from just going outside on the deck (supervised)? Our Boots likes to do that for short periods of time during the warmer months. She sniffs the breeze and watches the birds for about 5 minutes while I sit there with her. She's up high and has no contact with other outdoor cats (which I rarely ever see in our neighborhood).

It should only last 24-48 (maximum) hours - if she's still acting weird, you should call your vet - I think I've only seen one young kitty have a "bad" reaction that lasted 4 days, we're talking high fever, lethargic, wouldn't eat anything and had to be hospitalized... that kitten probably shouldn't have received the vaccine in the first place - it seems it wasn't the healthiest of cats... this was a long time ago at a different hospital.
It would be very unlikely that a cat can catch FELV just by going out onto your deck supervised... it would take a stray FELV (+) cat to come up within that little window of time and bite your cat, which is so unlikely to happen... I wouldn't worry too much about that.
I just got back from picking up Misty from her owner and transporting her to the airport where the pilot from Minnesota came and picked her up to fly her to the rescue. It was a wonderful feeling to help her out! When my batteries get recharged I will download the photos from the digital camera to post here.
Give lots of snuggles to Boo Boo for me! :-)
