Well 2 more days of am pooping on the floor. They said they would take a few cells from rectum as could have a bacteria inf. and that does not show in the stool sample. I pray that is what it is. I cannot do this,a mess every am! It is always in the am which is weird but maybe that is his time of the day to go. I just hope it is not a behavioral thing..I would think not though as it is so runny and if behavioral I would think he was just going whereever but would at least be a formed stool

Hi Chris,
Hopefully the vet will figure it out. I am sure it is not a behavioural thing. It sounds very much like a medical situation. Cats, as you know, prefer to be very neat and use their litter pans. Anything other than that is 95% of the time a medical problem.

I hope the vet can get it figured out quickly and get little Elvis feeling better again.
Been here, done this with literally months of diarrhea in our household 3 years ago and numerous fecal tests run. Fecal samples were sent out to two veterinary schools, several diagnosis, many drugs prescibed from antibiotics to flagyl and it would go away for a few weeks and then return. Fecal tests do show bacterial infections and they are used for this diagnosis in vet's office daily. There are numerous causes of diarrhea in dogs and cats ranging from intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral infections, dietary indiscretion, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and intestinal cancer. In addition, a number of extraintestinal diseases can also present with diarrhea—these include hyperthyroidism, chronic renal failure, Addison’s disease and pancreatic insufficiency.
That's why it's important to do both a thorough physical examination and a comprehensive history that includes dietary information. That's the foundation and from there you may need to follow up with any number of laboratory tests that include a complete blood count, a serum biochemistry profile, fecal flotation or fecal smear tests, or abdominal imaging studies such as x-rays or ultrasound evaluation.
For animals with chronic diarrhea or for which a diagnosis is more elusive, additional diagnostics may be needed, such as endoscopy, endoscopic biopsy, exploratory laparotomy or contrast radiological studies of the intestinal tract.
We had most of the tests and after almost losing Gabriel to flagyl toxicity I said enough.
After all of that and still no relief from the unknown cause I found the answer through much research of my own and educating myself on the nutrional requirements of cats. It was a simple diet change eliminating all dry cat food and feeding a high quality canned only diet that was the thing that worked. The diarrhea was gone in 24 hours and has never returned.
Now, obviously all kitties need to be checked for bacterial infections, parasites and the necessary bloodwork to rule out any of these issues. But after spending literally thousands of dollars on tests, medications and office visits the answer was a simple diet change. The final diagnosis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease which doesn't show up on blood tests and all of the nonsense about giardia was just a misdiagnosis. Now Gabriel, had not only diarrhea but also vomiting and we have had to follow up with acupuncture treatments for the vomiting along with the canned only diet, but the diarrhea part is a thing of the past. By the way, neither of mine had this problem as young kittens. Gabriel was a little over 2 and Zachary was about 11 months when this all started so IBD can start at any age. It is suspected to be not only caused by dry cat food(as cat's are obligate carnivores) but possibly a symtom of vaccinosis. I no longer vaccinate yearly and the new vaccine protocols for cat's tend to back my decision up. Humans don't require yearly vaccines, I don't know why we have thought that animals do except that it was a money boom for the vaccine manufacturer's and a good way to get you in for an annual exam at the vet's.
I'm just sharing my our experience as if I had known earlier about the diet change I would have tried it and spared both my boys the month's of unnecessary drugs and tests and saved myself a lot of grief as well.
Good luck, Lynn
I am having the EXACT SAME THING!! If you look at my post top cat and top cat update you'll see whats going on here. I have 3 cats and one of them is a 'ghost pooper'. Every morning I have a pile in my living room. Its getting quite frustrating.
Vet told me nothing physically or medically wrong with Prince (my suspect) and she said its more likely behavioral. I'm going to switch back to Science Diet weight management (I have a 16 lb Calico!!) and see if that helps.
Good luck! I share your frustrations!!!!!!!!! :)

I'm going to have to call and take him back. I scooted him from doing it in my living room only to find it he did it on my bathroom rug!
So upper? Did your cats just suddenly come on for no apparent reason? I've had him since July 3rd and he just started doing this about 2-3 weeks ago.
I'll have to stop at petsmart and get the usual science diet and see if that clears up. Did you change foods? I'm willing to bet this is what my cats problem is.. I HOPE!!!!! But whatever it takes I'll get to the bottom of it.. Hes too sweet of a cat to let anything happen to. BUT on the other hand, with 3 little kids I cant sit here and be scrubbing my carpets daily. So my only alternative is to find the problem and get the solution ASAP!
