mean? I've heard various tales of what it means. I've always heard that if a cat had a M on their forehead they were good mousers.

I have to agree with the Mary Jesus story, not only because of the "M" but the cross on the back. I'll have to look at my tabby to see if he has a cross on his back. We all have to remember that these precious critters are created by our Marker, God so it would stand the reason why these two markings appear on some cats.

I can't say I ever really believed the cross on the back until recently. Sure, there was a cross there, maybe - but it was faint and hard to see. But, at the clinic I work at, we had to have our big longhaired spotted tabby shaved (chronic hairballs, sigh) - and he's got big, pretty spots on his sides. But if you look over his back, there is a very visible cross now - when he shouldn't have stripes and doesn't have stripes anywhere else other than over his shoulders. The stripes fade into spots about halfway down his sides.

Also, keep in mind, that genetics say that ALL cats are tabbies, it's just that some have solid that overlays the tabby markings. At least, that was the case 12 years ago. Someone probably has something new and more offical than my 2 seconds of cat color genetics :) Which means my info is probably wrong :)

My cats say that the cross on a tabby cats back is just more proof of the fact that the universe was created for cats. Egotistical little buggers here :) Gotta love 'em.
